How To Draw Pixel Art Fire

INTRODUCTION TO PIXEL Fine art

Computer graphics and digital art as we know them today accept a root, and that is pixel art.

Back in the mean solar day, at that place wasn't a 'Pixel Fine art' style because every art fabricated on a estimator needed to exist pixel-by-pixel artwork.

Equally computers evolved, the capability to render images became more than advanced, enabling digital artists to create without the limitations of onetime hardware.

Creating art with these limitations in mind is the core of pixel art as an fine art form.

While no longer a necessary approach, forcing yourself to create in the boundaries of an old technology or set of techniques can aid you as an

artist.

Below are some examples of my exploration with pixel art.

In this article, I'll highlight some characteristics, basic techniques and guidelines so you tin beginning making your ain pixel fine art.

All the information hither tin can exist applied to any 'mode' and any software. And that'south the beauty of this subject.

The technical side of this art form is important, particularly if y'all want to make an homage of a video game.

But recollect that y'all don't demand to strength yourself to create a 32×32 pixel size artwork with but 3 colors, if yous don't desire to.

Information technology's beneficial to respect the fundamentals and the techniques of old-schoolhouse digital artists – but it's not obligatory to piece of work like them.

LEARNING By DOING

For this article, we'll work on an approachable claiming.

I want you to create a 64×64 pixel portrait.

That'southward it!

You lot can draw yourself, brand a fanart or invent a grapheme.
The goal is to create an artwork that can exist used used equally a social media avatar.

Start with a pocket-sized (resolution) file size, so the pixel unit is visible. There's no point to making pixel art where the pixels aren't evident.

SETTING Upwards YOUR CANVAS

For this article, I'll be using Clip Studio Pigment.
While there'southward great defended tools for making pixel art, you can use any drawing program to follow forth.

  • Create a 64×64 pixel document (one);
  • Go to View > Grid/Ruler Settings (two);
  • Configure as the following and so y'all can see a grid with every single pixel. You can plough the grid on/off anytime using the Shift+G shortcut. (3);

A practiced practise for working with pixel art is getting used to cartoon zoomed while keeping an eye on the actual-size artwork (4);

To create a secondary view of your current canvas, go to Window > Canvas > New Window and open a new instance of the electric current canvas.
Fix it to 100% and place in your workspace (5).

CREATING THE PIXEL Fine art TOOLS

Fourth dimension to introduce a bones concept.

Pixel art does non go along with automatic anti-aliasing.

Anti-aliasing is a useful algorithm that smooths edges of a shape.
This is made past calculation an extra row of pixels closest to the aliased edge.

Every bit you tin can see in the instance, the anti-aliased edge (vii) has an automatic gradient of pixels to give the shape a smoother contour.

The aliased border (half-dozen) is what nosotros're looking for when creating pixel art. Afterward, we can soften the edges by calculation anti-aliasing past manus (manually).

A dominion-of-pollex when using whatever software to create pixel fine art is to disable the anti-aliasing setting in brushes, tools and transformations.

In Prune Studio Paint you have to plough off anti-aliasing in:

  • brushes (8);
  • tools like Selection, Fill, Text, eg. (9);
  • and during any transformation using Edit > Transform (10);

In Clip Studio Paint you already have a pixel art pen. Information technology'south called 'Dot Pen' in the Mark category (eleven).

This is the simplest drawing castor available. Information technology has a fixed 1-pixel size, anti-aliasing turned off, and no choice for stabilization or color mixing.

I suggest you follow along this tutorial using this castor just.
Later in the game, you tin duplicate any of your 'mutual' brushes and use it for pixel fine art (as long you reduce brush size to lower values and disable anti-aliasing).

DRAWING THE LINEART

Since this volition exist a front-facing portrait, I'll start the drawing using the Symmetrical Ruler (12);

Place the Symmetrical Ruler on the Canvas and, to make sure it's on the expressionless-center, use the Object tool to select information technology and input values manually (xiii);

In this case I inverse the Center 10 and Middle Y values to 32, which is half of my total canvas size (64 pixels).

Now, select your Dot Pen once again and start drawing.
Since this brush can't be resized, information technology's a adept idea to zoom in on the canvas you're drawing (15) and use the duplicate view equally a reference (14).

I started my portrait drawing a initial sketch to find the construction of the caput (16) and and then I started adding details (17).

There's no need to use a bluish color. I merely adopt information technology because information technology helps my brain understand that I'm creating a rough for my final drawing.

If y'all're washed with the sketch yous can proceed with the linework.

Earlier adding the final lines, let me testify you a simple technique for drawing lines and curves in pixel art.

In the example beneath, the linework (18) doesn't expect smooth because there's a lot of duplicated pixels where it should exist a single pixel line.

You tin can ready those 'doubles' (it's a term) by removing any next pixels on the curve. In the example (19), I removed all pixels marked in cerise.

I suggest you to return to your sketch and expect out for those 'doubles' to make clean your linework.

Practice not worry if the curves don't feel right. Just remove the unwanted pixels.

TIP: if you need to erase a pixel, you tin can simply switch to the transparent color (I have my shortcut set to X);

In the example below yous tin can see the difference of the initial sketch (20) and the cleaned-upwards version (21).

Ready for another technique?

Let's showtime fixing the drawing and adjusting some curves.

Seeing the example beneath (22), you tin detect the distribution and spacing of pixels are non following a logical progression. (eg.: iii, 2, 1, four…)

While on this improved version (23), you can run into a better progression of pixels to create the bend. (eg.: 1, ii, two, 3…)

With that cognition, I propose you to effort the following practice earlier continuing on your drawing:

Try to describe some random lines and curves with the 2 concepts you just learned and so far: remove the doubles and maintaining the 'pixel progression'.

This will give you a solid gasp in how to profile shapes in pixel art.

Below is my concluding linework (25).

I did some pocket-sized adjustments on the proportions and curves, and removed some unnecessary pixels to make the face up more readable.

Take some time to compare with the original version (24) and try to notice where I practical the techniques.

COLORING TIME

The number of colors used on a sprite (term used to describe an object in game development), depends by how much y'all desire to stay shut to a specific limitation of an old technology.

While not necessary, you tin larn a lot virtually pixel art by limiting yourself to a modest amount of colors to choose.

For at present I suggest you lot start with a simple color palette. Equally a starting point, y'all tin use the 56 colors of the palette used past the NES (Nintendo Entertainment Organization) videogame console (26).

The color and tone choices on this palette are not perfect, but it provides a skilful starting indicate.

In the examples below you lot have the PC-98 estimator color palette (27) and a personal one I congenital in the by (28);

Subsequently you tin can start building your own palette, but always think to go on it tight and simple.

I first by filling my lines with some base of operations colors (flatting).

I'thousand starting with 5 initial colors, including the black linework to paint this portrait (29).

On this stage, call back to configure your Auto Select and Make full tools for the pixel fine art workflow, disabling Area Scaling and Anti-aliasing (xxx).

To shade (add shadows) the skin color on the portrait, y'all don't need to just apply the darker value of a specific colour;

I can potentially use any color available as long the values read correctly.

Here's a tip – Create a new layer on top of your layer stack, fill information technology with blackness and set the layer mode to Color.

Now you can use this layer to cheque the value relationship of your colors (32).

In the example below you tin can run into how I managed to employ the old groundwork color (imperial) every bit the shade color of my brownish skin (31). I prefer to get with a black groundwork to save one color…

Again, I don't need to – simply I'd like to exercise these limitations imposed by the NES colour palette.

For the highlights on the pare and spectacles (33), I don't needed to introduce any new colors because, while checking the grayscale values (34),

I noticed the colour of the t-shirt could be used for that.

I wanted to add some manual anti-aliasing to smooth the border between the lit and shadowed areas of the skin (36).

Using the NES palette just, I could not discover colors that I could utilise to create this gradient transition.

So here's where I abandoned the 'virtual limitations' in favor of the artwork.

In the case I added ii new colours (37), so I can add together more details to the shading.

I tin't stress this enough, but it's really important that you make these decisions while looking the artwork through the existent, not zoomed-in, sheet size (35).

Using the two new actress colors, I increased the rendering on the face adding more volume, wrinkles ('crusade I'm getting one-time) and softening some  shadows on the lit side of the portrait (38).

On the blue jacket, I decided to use the dithering technique to create the sensation of a gradient without adding colors (twoscore).

By breaking upward the solid transitions on a checkerboard pattern I can make the illusion of an inbetween color (39).

Dithering is an advanced technique and this is just a basic usage for it.

Every bit you can see, the effect creates a textural outcome that can be a problem if used on skin or smooth surfaces.

I constitute it advisable to use in the jacket (made of material), because I tin can do good from the rough texture.

After some tweaking, I managed to fully pigment the portrait.

I'yard very happy with the final event considering I could fit a lot of details for a 64×64 pixel size artwork with just 7 colors.

ps.: I too had pixels and colors enough to fix those weird-looking cartoony eyes. X-D

EXPORTING

Last, but not least…
When saving and exporting pixel art, use the GIF or PNG format.

Avoid using the JPEG format, especially with any level of compression.

This volition destroy all the honey and care you used to create your pixel fine art.

Look at the examples below: a 99% compressed JPEG (41) may expect ok from a distance, but it adds some non-wanted colors.

A 80% compressed version (42) will make whatever pixel creative person bleed. Then please, don't do that. 🙂

When information technology comes to posting on social media, you have to deal with the automatic-compression of the platform.

For Instagram, you'll accept no option considering the organisation automatically converts and resizes the image to a low-quality jpeg.

On Twitter, y'all'll have a sharper, near perfect image if the exported file is 506 pixels wide in PNG format.

That's it.

I promise you enjoyed this tutorial and also hope you managed to create your first pixel art portrait.

Below yous tin detect my minuscule, yet incredible, piece of art. 🙂

If yous create yours, please let me know.
